Since the life of people in Patan is strongly influenced by religion, each day begins by paying respect to Buddha or a Goddess. Early in the morning women carry trays with rice, flowers, red powder, and small pots with pure water to pray (Puja) at Buddhist and Hindu shrines near their houses. Daily Puja and chanting are also held early in the morning at Kwaba Buddhist Temple (Golden Buddha Temple), Bungadeo and Chakubadeo Temple, and Kumbheswor Hindu Temple (Konti). Morning Puja can be seen everywhere in the ancient city of Patan. You are welcome to observe or to join any of these Puja. Just get up early in the morning and walk around. Kwaba Buddhist Temple and Bungadeo and Chakubadeo Temple are only a 15-to-20-minute walk from Sanu's House. On the way, you may also see people chanting with music in Phalcha (public roadside shelter), but this is performed according to the lunar calendar, rather than daily, and it may continue for a week or a whole month. Sanu's family also performs morning and evening puja in Newari style. Around Patan there are many places for you to go sightseeing. If you wish, you may join Sanu's family in their farm work. All the farms are within an hour's walk, or you can go by bicycle. Rice planting is done in June and July, and harvesting in October, but there is work going on all year. Farmers are always busy. In the evening there are also many things to see. You can attend local people learning about traditional music, or join discussions in public roadside shelters, where workers rest after a hard day. Once or twice every month there is a festival with lots of excitement. Sanu's family will let you know what is happening and provide you with plenty of choices to keep you as busy as you want to be.
