Sanu's House, 10 to 15 minutes by taxi from the airport, is our homestay center. It is located in Gwarko, just outside old Patan City and opposite B&B Hospital, one of the leading private hospitals in the Kathmandu Valley. It is on the left-side of the ring-road just after crossing Gwarko Junction. It is a five-storey green building, very easy to recognize since it is only green building in that area. From the fifth floor you can see all the mountains surrounding Kathmandu Valley and the beautiful Himalaya mountains to the north.
The house belongs to Mr. Sanulal Awale. Our family lived there for many generations. We are Newar and farmers, but were originally potters from Patan City. Our old house is inside the city, and some family members still live there. We are Theravada Buddhist and vegetarian, therefore, we serves only vegetarian meals. Almost all the food has been produced by ourselves on our own land. Breakfast is included in homestay charges, but lunch and dinner will be serve at the guest's request.
Sanu's family, who know every corner of the city, its culture and traditions, will provide each guest with a sightseeing map, or, if the guest prefers, a family member will guide him or her sightseeing around Patan, which can be done on foot. Upon request, a family member will also guide a guest to nearby villages and sightseeing spots inside the valley or even further. There is no charge for tours within the city but if you ask them to go further, you should pay transportation charges.
All guests are treated as family members, and are invited to live as family, to eat in Newari style with the family, to join in farming and vegetable growing, and to take part in all the religious, cultural and traditional activities with the family. There is a library and a Buddha room at Sanu's House where a guest may read, relax, and meditate at any time. For those who wish to practice intensive meditation, International Meditation Center is just 15 minutes away by taxi. Mr. Sanulal goes there for meditation very often, and the family will gladly take a guest there.
